COVID-19: Unions intensify call for school closure

JOHANNESBURG – Teachers unions want schools to be closed for the whole of August.

This is because of the increasing COVID-19 infections.

The unions met with the Basic Education department on Wednesday night for the final push on their proposal.

Teachers’ union, Sadtu, says it’s not calling for an indefinite closure of schools, but a suspension until after the COVID-19 peak.

Sadtu says the 2020 academic year is not lost.
