Greg James has opened up how lockdown has ‘unlocked a new level of relationship’ for him and his wife Bella Mackie.

The Radio 1 DJ, who tied the knot with Bella back in 2018, revealed that spending time with her has been one of the big positives from lockdown for him.

Chatting to amid Radio 1’s Up Yours Corona campaign, Greg explained: ‘I’ve had a really nice time with my wife, Bella.

‘It’s sort of unlocked a new level of a relationship…because you’re with each other for a long time and you realise – you really realise – why you got together in first place, because you really get on, and you really love each other, and you really like each other’s company.

‘So we’ve had a great time and I’ve not been able to run around so much and do a million things, so that’s been really helpful, to just spend a bit more time at home.’

‘I’ve enjoyed sort of doing a bit less running around, but I’ve been able to actually concentrate on the show that more and come up with more ideas and we’ve been writing our new kids book and stuff so I’ve been trying to keep myself busy, so that I don’t fall into despair about the state of the world!’

Very valid.

One of the things Greg’s been keeping himself busy with is Radio 1’s new Up Yours Corona campaign.

The presenter is on the hunt for someone from every country in the world to shout ‘up yours Corona’ to stick it to the virus (and, of course, share their story with Radio 1).

Greg explained: ‘We’ve had months now of being united in the common sadness of this awful disease that has wrecked millions of people’s lives and we’re all, understandably, completely sick of it. The show’s been a real destination for sharing in stories and sharing in happy times.

‘We thought now it would be nice to unite everyone in nonsense and shout “Up yours Corona” at this thing and experiment with it, see if we can get 193 stories from around the world,’ he continued. ‘It’s turned more into that…because every single person from all over the all over the world has got a different story.

‘So far, we’ve managed to get 34 in a couple of days.’

Speaking about stories that have particularly resonated with him, Greg firstly recalled a listener from Croatia ‘who said he wants to “Up yours Corona”, not just for the disease but because he’s fed up with people talking about Game of Thrones being filmed there.’

‘We had a really lovely girl from Malaysia on yesterday,’ he continued, ‘whose boyfriend lives in Nottingham… and she hasn’t seen him since January.

‘So it was a nice way of sort of keeping a connection with that and telling that story and I think that resonated with a lot of people who haven’t been able to see relatives so, yes it is very stupid that we’re getting people to do this thing, but underneath it all there’s a really sweet load of stories that come out of it so it’s been it’s an unexpected pleasure to hear those sorts of stories.’
